CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Chesapeake Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Jared A. Cotton has agreed to extend his service to the school district following a retirement announcement.

In a statement, CPS revealed the additional time ensured an effective leadership transition for the next superintendent. The Chesapeake School Board reached a decision on the selection of the follow-up superintendent and has begun the contract negotiation process.
Previously set to retire July 1, 2026, Dr. Cotton has agreed to remain in his role through June 30, 2027, to guarantee the successful onboarding of the division’s next leader. However, the school board anticipates his continued service will be limited to a few months.
“We are incredibly appreciative of Dr. Cotton’s willingness to temporarily delay his retirement and continue serving Chesapeake Public Schools during this transition,” said School Board Chair Mrs. Kim Scott. “His love for this school division and commitment to our students, staff, and community are evident in his decision to ensure continuity of leadership, and we are grateful for Dr. Cotton’s partnership as the School Board finalizes this important process.”…
