VBPD: Man taken into custody following ShotSpotter alert

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – A man was taken into custody following a firearm-related incident in Virginia Beach early Sunday morning.

According to officials, officers responded to the 1500 block of Dahlia Drive after receiving a ShotSpotter alert at approximately 2:45 a.m.

Upon arrival, units canvassed the area, where they located and took 19-year-old Demario Burden into custody.

A firearm was confiscated at the scene.

Burden, a native of Virginia Beach, has been charged with the following:

  • Willfully discharging a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school
  • Reckless handling of a firearm
  • Carrying a concealed firearm with a permit
  • Carrying a loaded firearm through a public space
  • Possession of a firearm while in possession of a controlled substance
  • Possession with intent to sell, give, or distribute a controlled substance
  • Possession with intent to distribute marijuana
