PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Mercy Chefs is holding a series of food-filled backpack giveaway events. Several upcoming dates remain.
The Summer Backpack Giveaway is taking place every Wednesday, from 5 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the following locations. The program culminates with a free block party in Portsmouth in August. Below is the remaining schedule.
- Suffolk: Mach Benn Elementary School from 5-6 p.m. on July 15.
- Chesapeake: Camelot Elementary School from 5-6 p.m. on July 22.
- Newport News & Hampton: Palmer Elementary from 5-6 p.m. on July 29.
- Portsmouth: Free Block Party, 711 Washington Street from 4-7 p.m. on Aug. 12.
10 On Your Side joined Mercy Chefs last month as volunteers packed 2,800 backpacks with easy-to-make meals and healthy snacks during the summer months. The goal of this program is to provide nutritious food to 3,000 Hampton Roads students while they are out of school.
WAVY-TV surprises Mercy Chefs with Nexstar’s 30 Days of Giving grant
WAVY’s parent company, Nexstar, celebrated the 30th anniversary of the company’s founding with “60 Days of Giving.” The Nexstar Media Foundation awarded a total of $300,000 in grants to 60 non-profit organizations across the country, with two $5,000 grants awarded every day in June.
