VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — The Virginia Beach School Board was held in contempt of court on Sep. 1 for ignoring court orders to take down records accusing students of racially motivated bullying, and has been ordered to pay $6,831 in attorney fees.
The original incident happened in March 2025 when five white Kellam High School students allegedly gave a black student racist items for his birthday, including fried chicken, candy, and handwritten notes.

The families of three Kellam High School students filed a $10 million lawsuit against the school’s principal, with attorney Tim Anderson representing the students.

In Jan. 2026, the judge reversed the decision of the school board and cleared the students’ suspension records of racial harassment and bullying.
The court ordered the school to ensure that the students’ educational records reflected the ruling.
