More healthcare workers needed in Hampton Roads

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) — Claude Moore Opportunities (CMO), a Virginia healthcare workforce nonprofit, released data in Sept. about the need for more healthcare workers across Hampton Roads and Eastern Virginia.

Based on an analysis by the George Mason University Center for Health Workforce, it is estimated that, in order to meet the community’s healthcare demands, the region needs:

  • 3,536 Registered Nurses
  • 1,725 Social and Human Service Assistants
  • 987 Physical Therapists
  • 905 Licensed Practical and Licensed Vocational Nurses
  • 694 Nursing Assistants
  • 679 Radiologic Technologists and Technicians
  • 642 Mental Health Counselors
  • 607 Medical Assistants
  • 588 Physician Assistants
  • 570 Occupational Therapy Assistants
  • 570 Speech-Language Pathologists
  • 495 Mental Health and Substance Abuse Social Workers
  • 487 Cardiovascular Technologists and Technicians
  • 465 Nurse Practitioners
  • 434 Personal Care Aides
