Increased police presence at Menchville High after fight

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — There was increased police presence at Menchville High School in Newport News on Friday after several students were involved in a fight the day before.

Schools spokesperson Michelle Price said it happened at the end of a second pep rally in the gym, and school security officers and administrators were able to quickly separate the students involved.

No injuries were reported and no weapons were discovered, Price said, but “a thorough investigation is underway and the students involved in the incident are facing serious consequences.”

Menchville parents and guardians were notified about the fight on Thursday afternoon.

Matt Michalec with the Newport News Police Department told WAVY on Friday the police presence included up to six officers at a time.

On Saturday, Michalec told WAVY four students, including three minors, were charged with assault by mob. An 18-year-old student was additionally charged with contributing to delinquency of a minor. A protective order was issued on behalf of the victim.
