Newport News 7-Eleven employee facing charges after shooting incident

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A 7-Eleven employee who police said accidentally shot himself during an altercation is now facing charges.

Newport News Police responded to the 7-Eleven in the 12600 block of Nettles Drive just after 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 12, in reference to a gunshot victim. Officers arrived to find a man suffering from a non life-threatening gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The preliminary investigation revealed an employee at the business got into an altercation with at least one customer, police said. The altercation took place outside the business and turned physical. The employee accidentally shot himself during the altercation, police said. No one else was injured.

On June 21, Newport News police charged the employee, 28-year-old Liam Vaughn, with shooting a firearm in a public place causing injury, which is a felony, and misdemeanor charges of reckless handling of a firearm and concealed weapon carry.
