Smithfield Police name suspect in Jersey Park Apartments shooting

Smithfield Police have charged a Smithfield woman with an Oct. 22 shooting at Jersey Park Apartments.

Deputy Police Chief Chris Meier said officers went to the scene at approximately 12:45 p.m. after reports that a woman had been shot in the arm. With assistance from the Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office, police arrested a suspect the same day.

Nineteen-year-old Elriana Hill of Smithfield faces one count of aggravated malicious wounding, four counts of attempted malicious wounding, six counts of shooting within 1,000 feet of a school, one count of shooting into an occupied vehicle and one count of shooting into an occupied building – all felonies. She’s also charged with five counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony and four counts of misdemeanor destruction of property.

Westside Elementary, the referenced school located within 1,000 feet of the shooting, initiated a “secure protocol, formerly called a modified lockdown,” according to Isle of Wight County Schools spokeswoman Lynn Briggs.
