Students unharmed after Isle of Wight school bus hits cable line

A school bus en route to Hardy Elementary struck a low-hanging cable line on North Mason Street in downtown Smithfield on Nov. 1.

According to Isle of Wight County Schools Deputy Superintendent Christopher Coleman, the bus came to a stop after its antenna hit the power line, causing the line to break and fall to the street. Coleman said the bus itself and the driver and students on board are unharmed.

The bus resumed its route to Hardy shortly before 9:25 a.m. Coleman estimated students on the bus will arrive at the school no more than 20 to 25 minutes late.

The incident, which occurred just after 9 a.m. on Nov. 1, drew an Isle of Wight County sheriff’s deputy and Smithfield Police officers, as well as an ambulance and fire truck to the scene.

Coleman said a letter will be sent home to parents of Hardy students with details on the incident.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story misidentified the cable line as a power line.
