Police ID Newport News man who died in shooting near I-664

Newport News police have identified the man who died late Friday night in a shooting near the intersection of Marshall Avenue and Interstate 664 .

Officers were alerted to the 10:30 p.m. shooting through the ShotSpotter gunfire locater technology, police said in a release. When they arrived in the 3700 block of Marshall Avenue, they found a man with at least one gunshot wound, the release said. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The man has been identified as 24-year-old Mahleik Barber, of Newport News.

The investigation is ongoing.
