NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Two individuals have been charged in the homicide of 24-year-old Mahleik Barber, who suffered a gunshot wound in the Nov. 1 Marshall Ave shooting.

On Tuesday, Nov. 12, detectives charged a 17-year-old male, who was in custody on an unrelated charge, with second-degree murder, malicious wounding, and several firearm offenses in Barber’s death.
Additionally, on Wednesday, Nov. 13, officers arrested 18-year-old Deandre Hunter of Newport News on charges of second-degree murder, malicious wounding, and several firearm offenses.
“Technology continues to play a key role in fighting crime today. We are grateful for the city’s investment in these tools which assist our department,” Chief of Police Steve Drew said. “I am also thankful for the hard work and dedication of our detectives to find those responsible for this senseless act.”
