Area shipbuilding company sees rash of car break-ins

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — One of Hampton Roads’ largest employers has been seeing a rash of car break-ins of late.

Employees at HII Newport News Shipbuilding say they have had their cars broken into, and one said his car was broken into twice in a matter of a week.

Aarron Williams’ car was first hit by thieves two Fridays ago, but he didn’t realize it until he was sitting in his car.

“You know, just unwinding at the end of a long shift, you know what I mean? And I felt the breeze, it was cold that day,” Williams said.

He noticed some loose change missing and an ashtray that he’s since replaced. Two other employees he walked out with also noticed their cars were broken into. They immediately got on their phones.

“The security personnel through the shipyard, we called them, notified them first,” Williams said.

And just last week, Williams’ car was broken into a second time. Thankfully, nothing was taken, and he’s now patched it up with cardboard and duct tape. He said his 6-year-old son told him he wanted to put on his Spiderman outfit and catch the suspect.
