NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — 21-year-old Amari Maxwell passed away following a shooting on Tuesday. His dad, Carlos Russell spoke with 10 On Your Side in remembrance of him.
“I’m a music person, and he loved music. He made songs. He recorded songs like almost every day. So, music was a big part. He cared about music, sports and the Ladies. He loved, you know, he liked to have a little girlfriend,” Russell said.
On Tuesday afternoon, Maxwell was with his girlfriend. He was walking along a sidewalk when he noticed a guy he had an argument with a year and a half ago.
Russell received a FaceTime call from a neighbor in reference to a shooting that involved his son.
“I got a call from a neighbor. I mean, it was kind of disturbing as a FaceTime call. He said, ‘you need to get down here. I think it’s your son,’ and I was like, ‘oh, show me,’ and he showed me the image on FaceTime, and I saw Amari laying on the ground. I ran downstairs and that’s when I got his FaceTime.”
Russell hoped his son survived his injuries.
