PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — While VDOT crews did clear a lot of the snow from our interstates and highways, black ice can still linger.
Overnight drop in temperatures cause dangerous road conditions in Hampton Roads
Black ice can be hard to see, especially when you start to get comfortable while driving through these wintry conditions. If you are not careful, black ice can cause you spin off the road — but with a few basic tips, you can keep those tires on the road despite these conditions.
The biggest tip of all is to not speed. As we saw with crashes from earlier this week after the snowfall, going fast is especially dangerous. If your vehicle starts to slip, do not slam on the brakes. Gradually apply pressure on the brakes instead to come to a slow stop.

“Not applying any quick pressure to our brakes and making sure that those movements are gradual so that you can stay safe and keep the rest of the people on the road with you safe as well,” Ryan Adcock from AAA Tidewater said.
