‘I don’t know how you can do that to somebody’: Newport News hit-and-run survivor shares story

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Nelson Viera-Green had recently taken up bike riding as a way to get in shape and had been riding for several miles earlier this month when he was struck by a car on a Newport News road, leaving the Rivers Casino poker dealer with broken bones and constant headaches as he recovers from the trauma.

According to police, on May 8 at 9:35 p.m., officers were called to an auto-pedestrian accident on Harpersville Road near Ferguson Lane, and when they arrived, they found an adult man who had been riding a bicycle, later identified as Viera-Green, who appeared to have been hit by a passing vehicle. The driver of the car involved did not stay at the scene.

“They hit somebody, and they just kept going,” Viera-Green said. “I don’t know how you can do that to somebody.”…
