Semi-truck carrying 40,000 pounds of ham crashes on Virginia’s Route 258

A late-night car accident in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, turned into a full-blown logistical headache. A semi-truck loaded with 22 tons of ham overturned near Five Forks Road. It happened just before midnight Tuesday and shut down part of the roadway.

Virginia State Police said the chain reaction started with a 2000 GMC Sonoma heading south without its lights on

That made it difficult to see, especially on a dim, rural stretch of road. An on-duty sheriff’s deputy in a 2022 Ford Explorer was driving behind the Sonoma and rear-ended it.

Moments later, a northbound 2020 Freightliner semi-truck tried to avoid the wreck. The driver swerved but ended up running off the road. The tractor-trailer tipped over in a ditch and landed on its side. It was hauling about 44,000 pounds of ham at the time.

Officials said the semi-truck cargo stayed contained, but the scene was a mess

First responders took all three drivers to a local hospital. Their injuries were described as non-life-threatening.

Traffic had to be detoured while crews cleared debris and righted the overturned semi. The road has since reopened, but the crash is still under investigation…
