ISLE OF WIGHT, Va. (WAVY) — Over 250 animals have been seized in Isle of Wight County as part of an ongoing investigation.
According to officials, on June 16, the Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant in the 11000 block of Smith’s Neck Road for suspected animal cruelty and illegal bird fighting. The warrant was executed in conjunction with Isle of Wight County Animal Services and the Virginia Animal Fighting Task Force.
During the operation, more that 250 animals were seized, including more than 190 roosters and hens. Officials say many of the roosters displayed signs consistent with preparation for fighting, including physical alterations and housing arrangements commonly associated with cockfighting operations.
“This is a serious case of animal cruelty,” said Sheriff James Clarke Jr. “The evidence recovered during this investigation suggests these birds were being used, or prepared to be used, for illegal fighting activity. We are committed to holding those responsible accountable under the law.”…
