Mother of Naval Station Norfolk sailor killed seeks Navy accountability

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WAVY) — The mother of a sailor who disappeared from Naval Station Norfolk and was found dead in a Norfolk neighborhood will be in Washington D.C. Wednesday demanding transparency and accountability from the U.S. Navy.

Angelina Resendiz was initially reported missing May 29 and was last seen in her barracks at Naval Station Norfolk around 10 a.m., according to the Navy. The Naval Criminal Investigative Service confirmed June 10 the body found in Norfolk was that of Resendiz.

Esmeralda Castle, Resendiz’s mother, will be in Washington with the League of United Latin American Citizens, or LULAC, for a news conference and will bring up at least nine issues. And the name of the man Castle’s attorney has identified as the person detained in connection to her death, Jermiah Copeland, could come up also.

“There were a lot of missteps from the military side, and a lot of unaccountability from that that could have prevented the situation,” said Dr. Ray Serrano, who said the news conference will take a critical look at how he said the Navy mishandled the early part of the investigation into Resendiz’s disappearance…
