Off-duty nurse performs CPR on 5-year-old in multi-vehicle I-64 crash in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A serious multi-vehicle crash Friday night resulted in life-threatening injuries, with one of the victims a 5-year-old who was ejected from a car seat due to not being properly strapped in, according to Virginia State Police.

That 5-year-old may have died at that time if not for CPR given to the child by a hero passing by. However, Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters notified State Police that the child died Wednesday afternoon.

Fredericksburg nurse Ashley Whitten was on vacation in Virginia Beach for the weekend with her husband, Joel. They decided to extend their trip, which led them to be on the road at the exact moment the crash happened.

“We saw a bunch of cars with their hazards on that were going to the right,” Ashley Whitten said. “So my husband immediately pulled over. We were hearing yelling and screaming like, “My baby, my baby!”…
