NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Everyone has certainly been feeling the heat lately across Hampton roads with temperatures well into the 90s, and while the heat is on, that hasn’t stopped animals at the Virginia Zoo from staying cool.
How animals at the Virginia Zoo beat the heat
“When temperatures get too high or too low, we have protocols of which animals can be outside and which need to be inside because they can’t handle that high of temperatures,” said Kirstin Pendleton with the Virginia Zoo. “We also allow them to have access inside, normally all the time, but especially when it’s so hot. We give them the option to go in or out. So you have to be a little more patient when you come out to the zoo, being like “OK, I can’t see them because they have the option to be inside.”
According to the Virginia Zoo, each habitat is specifically designed to allow the animals to stay cool when temperatures rise.
“It just mimics their natural environment,” Pendleton said. “It then allows them to cool off when it gets too hot because some aren’t used to an environment like Virginia.”…
