CURRITUCK COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) — A man has died after a medical incident on a rental pontoon boat in the Currituck Sound on Tuesday, according to NC Wildlife Officers.
Scott Matthew Johnson, 44, of Gaithersburg, Maryland, was a passenger on a rental pontoon boat with his fiancée and her family in the Currituck Sound, and while trying to retrieve the anchor, it became entangled in grass and mud, NC Wildlife Officers said.

In the process of getting the anchor, he had a medical emergency and fell overboard, NC Wildlife Officers said. Several people were able to pull him back into the boat, and people on board began CPR and other lifesaving measures. Johnson was wearing a life jacket at the time, which officials said made it easier to get him out of the water.
