Two people occupy the same space, at the same time, but at that moment they do not meet. Philosophically, this is known as coexistence, people living in a state of mutual support even though their proximity may not affect each other’s existence or actions.

The probability of being in the same place at the same time without meeting can be high, dependent on the number of people present, the location and the activity. Imagine you find yourself in New York City at the Statue of Liberty with 100 other strangers climbing the same staircase. And, 215 stairs later, you still haven’t met.

In the case of Britt and Derrick Lapiska, there were several other students present, they were just outside Philadelphia and they were in the same play, Seussical the Musical. High school students at the time, they were never on stage together until the end of the play, and still did not meet until they ran into each other six years later at a dive bar, also just outside Philadelphia and were introduced by mutual friends…
