Jury deliberates in murder trial for man accused in shooting death of Ali Muhammad

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A jury began deliberations Wednesday afternoon in the murder trial of Jalen Garces, the man charged with second-degree murder in the June 2023 shooting death of Ali Muhammad in Norfolk.

The jury will continue its deliberations at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, though no friends or extended family members of either Garces or Ali Muhammad will be allowed in the courtroom tomorrow due to a verbal altercation outside the courtroom. Only their parents will be allowed in court.

Muhammad, 33, was shot and killed in the parking lot of his apartment complex on 1st Bay Street the night of June 29, 2023. His father, Bilal Muhammad, an outspoken activist and crusader against gun violence in Hampton Roads, testified in the trial and said he was on the phone with his son when he was shot.
