Foul stench in Virginia Beach neighborhood prompts investigation

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Neighbors say it comes and goes. When 10 On Your Side went to the source of an odor near Mount Trashmore Park on Wednesday, our crew got waft of a stench which smelled like human waste.

It is along Thalia Creek in the Windsor Oaks neighborhood near the corner of Water Oak Road and South Plaza Trail. Occasionally, oily sheens can be seen in the water along with other unidentifiable things.

Wendy Bentley has lived there since the 1980s. She said the smells started in 2017 when the city dredged the area following a hurricane. White substance will sometimes bubble up from the bottom, with differing shades of brown appearing. Wildlife stopped coming by since the odors became more frequent. On bad days, the smell can get inside their homes with the windows closed…
