Electric bikes are booming in Virginia Beach. But with their growing popularity comes new concerns.
City leaders say a rise in accidents and complaints from pedestrians has forced them to take a closer look at how e-bikes are used around the city. The Boardwalk and neighborhood trails are at the center of the debate.
Speed and Safety Concerns
Pedestrians often complain about e-bikes zipping by at high speeds. Some parents worry about kids riding bikes that can hit 20–25 mph in crowded areas.
“It’s unsettling to think of a 6- or 7-year-old flying down the Boardwalk at those speeds,” City Councilman Stacy Cummings said. He added that the problem has grown quickly as more riders hit the streets and trails this summer.
The Bigger Picture
