Staunton man charged with attempted murder after shooting

STAUNTON, Va. (WHSV) – The Norfolk Police Department arrested a Staunton man on Saturday. At 9:03 a.m., the Staunton Police Department responded to a shooting in the 100 block of Gray Avenue. When Staunton officers arrived, the suspect had already fled the scene, and was later found by Norfolk police.

The suspect was identified as 44-year-old Charles Ray Smith of Staunton. Smith was charged with shooting into an occupied vehicle, and one adult male victim was transported to UVA Hospital for his injuries.

Smith has been charged with the following offenses:

  • Attempted murder
  • Two counts of aggravated malicious wounding
  • Reckless handling of a firearm
  • Shooting at an occupied vehicle
  • Use of a firearm in the commission of a felony
  • Shooting a firearm in a public place
  • Possession of a firearm by a felon
