Suffolk converting former motel into homeless shelter

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — An initiative by the city of Suffolk is finally coming to fruition, as city leaders are refurbishing an old hotel to help the homeless population get back on their feet.

The old Regal Inn on Pruden Boulevard was on its way to becoming a derelict property and adding to crime in the area, but now, just like its future residents, it can look forward to a new life.

Sitting empty for a number of years, Suffolk city leaders saw the Regal Inn as an opportunity.“The configuration of it as a motel lends itself perfectly for a homeless shelter,” Suffolk Interim Deputy City Manager Gerry Davis said.With 18 rooms and 37 beds, the renovated property will give the homeless population in Suffolk a place to gather, wash clothes, bathe, sleep, find employment and be referred to other health services…
