Virginia Weather Alert: Coastal Flooding Threatens Hampton Roads and Chesapeake Bay Communities Midweek

NORFOLK, Virginia — The National Weather Service (NWS) in Wakefield has issued a warning for moderate tidal flooding expected to impact parts of Hampton Roads and the lower Chesapeake Bay beginning Wednesday evening and lasting through Friday.

Coastal Flooding Risk Builds Midweek

Persistent northeast winds are forecast to push water levels higher starting late Tuesday, with the greatest flooding threat during high tide cycles midweek.

Areas most at risk include:

  • Norfolk
  • Newport News
  • Portsmouth
  • Hampton

The NWS said residents in low-lying neighborhoods should prepare for water on roadways, localized flooding, and possible travel disruptions.

What Residents Can Expect

  • Tuesday: No significant coastal flooding expected.
  • Wednesday–Friday: Moderate flooding could bring water into vulnerable neighborhoods and across some roadways.
  • Weekend: Conditions are expected to ease by Saturday as winds weaken and water levels recede.

While impacts are not expected to reach major flood thresholds, forecasters stressed that even moderate tidal flooding can cause detours, temporary business closures, and property damage in the most flood-prone communities.

Recurring Issue for Coastal Virginia

Officials noted that tidal flooding is a recurring concern for coastal Virginia during prolonged northeast wind events, particularly in areas along the James River and lower Chesapeake Bay.

Residents are urged to monitor updated forecasts and take precautions to protect property ahead of the high tide cycles…
