Parents fear for children’s safety after recent shooting death

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Though there was a quick arrest in a weekend Virginia Beach homicide, as city police charged a man with second-degree murder in the shooting death of a 20-year-old Newport News man, parents are still on edge after what they say have been several incidents at the nearby shopping center where the shooting took place.

Police arrested Cesar Evans, 21, and charged him with second-degree murder in the shooting death of Juelle Morton, 20, which happened around 2:15 a.m. Saturday in the nearby Renaissance Place Shopping Center. Morton was shot several times, according to police.

“Several people have reached out about the shooting the other night at the Renaissance shopping center,” Virginia Beach Councilman Stacy Cummings said Monday. “They’ve expressed concern about these venues that are operating there in that shopping center.”

Business owners told 10 On Your Side the uncovered body was still there at 10:30 a.m.“I’ve reached out to the city manager and the police chief,” Cummings said. “We have scheduled a meeting so that I can get a briefing on the history of the police interaction in this area.”
