Behind the scenes of Smithfield’s newest hospital

SMITHFIELD, Va. (WAVY) — Riverside Health will soon bring medical services to an underserved community with the opening of the new Riverside Smithfield Hospital next year.

The facility was designed using suggestions from those in the medical field — suggestions that make it easier to address the needs of its patients.

Soon, residents in the Isle of Wight County and Surry County communities won’t have to travel 30 to 40 minutes to the nearest hospital. Riverside Smithfield is in their backyard, soon to offer in-patient, emergency and specialty care.“So this is going to change lives, it’s going to save lives, and we’re incredibly grateful to be doing the work that we’re doing here,” said Riverside Smithfield Hospital President Jessica Macalino.It’s a 50-bed hospital with four operating rooms.
