Blaze in Portsmouth | Top floor apartments damaged, displacing residents

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Portsmouth Fire Rescue & Emergency Services responded to a multi-family residential structure fire Saturday afternoon in the 3600 block of Gateway Drive.

According to authorities, the 911 dispatch center received the initial report at approximately 1:30 p.m. Fire crews from Portsmouth and Suffolk arrived six minutes later to find smoke and flames coming from a second-floor apartment. Officials immediately called a working fire.

Firefighters implemented the working fire action plan, successfully extinguishing the blaze and bringing it under control by 2:17 p.m. The fire was fully out by 2:30 p.m., with damage contained to the top two apartments of the building…
