Portsmouth City Council meets after fatal weekend shooting

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — People are raising safety concerns after a fatal shooting in Portsmouth just before midnight Saturday along George Washington Highway. City council was said to be holding a special called meeting in response.

One dead, two injured in shooting on George Washington Highway in Portsmouth

Three people were hurt, and one of those people died in the shooting that happened in the 4500 block of George Washington Highway outside a strip shopping mall that houss businesses known to have late night entertainment.

Korey Malik Robinson, 19, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder, shooting in the commission or attempt of a felony and willfully discharging firearms in public spaces, in connection to the shooting death of Vinol Gleen Ealey, 39, and two other men who were injured after being shot.

This won’t be the first time Portsmouth City Council has addressed violence in this part of town. 10 On Your Side spoke with Portsmouth Mayor Shannon Glover just two months ago about complaints from residents about noise, traffic, and the sound of gunshots.

At the time, council had approved an amendment to an ordinance limiting live music to the hours of 8 p.m. to midnight. While it applied only to new businesses, they didn’t rule out enforcement action against existing businesses with two or more violent incidents in a year…
