Blog: Dropping temps, a wintry mix, and an overnight freeze

What a difference a day makes… Yesterday, I was doing yard work with my daughter, and it became almost hot out. High temps where I was made it to the upper 70s. Temps were in the 70s area-wide.

We are in for a very different 24 hours. We are going from early Fall weather to Winter weather in a short time. Last night a strong cold front moved into the region. It brought a few thunderstorms before midnight. Then rain fell this morning as the front pushed offshore.

The front will keep moving east today. There is an area of low pressure up in the Northeast.

There is a lot of cold air moving in behind the front. High temperatures today will only be in the low-mid 50s.

The clouds and showers will break up through the mid-late morning. Then we’ll have a mix of sun and clouds through the afternoon. Winds will be out of the northwest at 10-15mph with a few gusts to 20mph.

By tonight a strong upper-level low will be rolling overhead. Plus, we’ll have a second shot of colder air entering the region at the surface. This will produce a scattered mix of rain and snow. Most of which should fall between midnight and 6am.

Surface temperatures will be above freezing during that time. So most (if not all) of what falls will melt. Our Future Trak model and the European model are showing some light accumulations. However, they are not taking into account the surface temps and the ground temperatures in terms of what will actually be on the ground.

Yes…There may be some grassy spots or a few decks that could get a light dusting, but overall this won’t be a problem. Having said that, temps will fall to the upper 20s to low 30s shortly after the precipitation ends.

There is a freeze warning for almost the entire area for tonight and tomorrow morning. This means it’s time to bring in the potted plants. Cover up any sensitive plants that are in the ground. Also, bring in the pets.

Winds will gust in the morning to 25mph.

This will put the wind chills in the 20s. Things won’t be much better during the afternoon. High temps will only be in the mid-upper 40s.

Keep this in mind if you are attending any Veteran’s Day events. At least it will be dry. We’ll be partly sunny for most of the day. Beyond that we’ll have dry/cool weather for the rest of the week. High temps will be in the upper 50s to low 60s…
