NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A Newport News man will spend the next four decades in federal prison for running a large-scale drug trafficking ring that operated across Hampton Roads and funneled money and marijuana through major airports along the East Coast.
Federal prosecutors say 33-year-old Cortez Dayshawn Bumphus led the operation from Lux Auto in Newport News, where members stored drugs inside vehicles parked around the business.
Investigators found the group was often armed and moved massive quantities of marijuana between 2020 and 2023, using couriers who flew cash out of Virginia and returned with drugs. Law enforcement seized nearly $400,000 in drug proceeds and about 1,000 pounds of marijuana during the investigation…
