Man sentenced to more than 5 years for 2024 Norfolk bank robbery

NORFOLK, Va. — A Norfolk man has been sentenced to five years and eight months in prison for robbing a bank teller last year by passing a threatening note demanding money.

Lemar Antonio Veale Jr., 25, was convicted at a bench trial of robbery by threat and extortion. He robbed a Truist Bank teller on East Little Creek Road on Oct. 8, 2024, handing a handwritten note stating he had a gun and would harm people inside the bank if he was not given $100,000. The teller alerted Norfolk Police via the bank’s silent alarm and gave Veale $36,500.

Veale fled in a black Toyota Camry. Norfolk officers attempted to stop him, but he eluded them. A BOLO alert was issued to neighboring cities. Veale was later found in Portsmouth by the Portsmouth Police Department’s Fugitive Apprehension Unit. After a brief pursuit, he drove into a dead-end parking lot where officers arrested him.
