NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Thumbing through pictures on his cell phone, Takari Mason appeared disappointed. “I wish that I had taken more pictures with my brother,” that’s what Mason said three days after his brother, 31-year-old Dewand McGowan was shot and killed at the Wendy’s fast food restaurant in the 1400 block of Warwick Blvd.

When asked if he could think of anyone who would want to hurt his brother, Takari Mason said, “I couldn’t even think of nobody. They. Everybody loved (him). I don’t know about no enemies. I’ve never heard about nobody not liking them. None of that. Really, I have no idea.

“She got killed in [an]argument. The lady shot her in the face. This happened when I was incarcerated, so I couldn’t even be there to morally support [the family],” said Mason.

“I tried everything I could, to keep him involved in his and nieces lives. It was never no bad words between us. It was always good memories,” Mason said. “He was loved by many. He was loved by many. But more than I even knew. Now that I see it, he’s gone. It’s a lot more people than I thought. His death really shook the city.”…
