HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) – Family and friends all gathered for a vigil outside Darling Stadium in Hampton to remember the life of Dewand McGowan, who was shot and killed while at work.
McGowan worked as the nighttime manager at a Wendy’s on Warwick Boulevard in Newport News. His father, John Beamon, says he spoke with Dewand just minutes before he was killed.
“The last time I talked to him, at 9:49 Tuesday night, he called me and told me that he was going to clock out at 10:00,” said Beamon, “about ten minutes later, his cousin called me, and it was over. But the last thing we say to each other was, I love you. I couldn’t want nothing more from God. God granted me that. To hear him say that he loved me.”…
