Happy Returnuary: Nearly 17% of holiday sales will be returned

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – The day after Christmas brought crowds back to local stores as shoppers returned unwanted gifts and cashed in holiday gift cards.

Retailers are preparing for a surge in returns and exchanges as the National Retail Federation estimates about 17 percent of holiday sales will be returned. January is said to be the peak period.
