NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — As New Year’s Eve celebrations approach, Drive Safe Hampton Roads and the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles Highway Safety Office are offering free rides home while local police increase traffic enforcement to curb impaired driving.
Drive Safe Hampton Roads will again sponsor 757 Sober Ride, a free ride program powered by Lyft, from 5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, through 4 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 1. The program provides rides of up to $15 for individuals 21 and older who have been drinking alcohol or using drugs.
At the same time, the Newport News Police Department announced it will conduct additional traffic patrols from Monday, Dec. 29, through Saturday, Jan. 3, targeting impaired driving and other traffic infractions.
