NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Instead of planning Dewand McGowan’s upcoming 32nd birthday, loved ones are planning his funeral.
Man shot and killed at Newport News Wendy’s
On the night of Dec. 16 at the Wendy’s restaurant in the 14000 block of Warwick Blvd., someone opened fire and killed McGowan who was a manager there. He was proud of his work and he made his family proud, including a cousin who stopped by to say hello. She captured the exchange on video.

“I don’t understand how someone could still be just walking around when I know there has to be surveillance footage in front of the Wendy’s, inside of the Wendy’s,” said Linette Mason, the mother of the victim’s brother, Takari Mason. McGowan’s mother was killed by gun violence two years ago, and Mason affectionately calls McGowan her son.

Regina Mobley: Are you a different man after the death of your brother?
Takari Mason: I would say, yeah. I think about him every day.
Loved ones hope customers, former classmates and those who care will pitch in and help the family raise at least $9,000 for a proper funeral burial…
