City Council approves funding for key development sites in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — The Newport News City Council approved $2 million on Dec. 9 to continue redevelopment efforts in the Southeast community, targeting future development at two sites across the city.

The funding supports planning and development efforts at the Chase Site, an undeveloped 28-acre waterfront property located off Marshall Avenue. City officials said the investment is part of a broader redevelopment strategy that has already brought more than $200 million in federal and local funding into the city’s South District through the Choice Neighborhoods Initiative over the past several years.

City leaders said redevelopment efforts this year will prioritize two additional sites across different districts.

The Sherwood Site in the North District spans 7.74 acres and is anchored by the new Grissom Library, a $33 million, 51,450-square-foot facility currently under development. The state-of-the-art library is expected to include expanded children’s and teen areas, meeting and auditorium spaces, and advanced technology and computer labs.
