Tuesday marks three years since a student shot his teacher at Richneck Elementary School

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Tuesday, January 6, marks three years since the Richneck Elementary School shooting in Newport News. First-grade teacher Abby Zwerner was shot and critically injured by her 6-year-old student.

The student was taken into custody and to a hospital for evaluation and care, according to Newport News police. Officials never publicly released his name because he’s a minor. However, the boy’s mother, Deja Taylor, is currently in prison on state child neglect and federal gun charges in connection with the shooting.

Zwerner would go on to sue the school, saying staff ignored warnings about the student in the hours leading up to the shooting. The lawsuit went to trial last October, where she was awarded $10 million of the $40 million she asked for…
