$150 million wrongful death lawsuit filed after child with autism ‘secluded’ at Virginia Beach elementary school

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A Hampton Roads mother, Julie Xirau, has filed a $150 million lawsuit against Southeastern Cooperative Educational Programs.

She alleged her 11-year-old son, who had autism, was mistreated at Virginia Beach’s Pembroke Elementary School.

The complaint includes pictures of what the lawsuit alleges was a space where Josh Sykes was confined — something the complaint deems a “makeshift prison” — just days before his death…
