NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Michael Phillip Jones, 39, was convicted of misdemeanor trespassing on Dec. 18 and sentenced to 15 days in jail for his actions at the main Norfolk post office on Church Street. During a May 27, 2025 incident, he followed and harassed postal employees after entering a secured area clearly marked with “No Trespassing” signs.
According to the Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, Jones followed a mail carrier from Chesapeake to the main post office on Church Street in Norfolk. When he arrived, around 10:40 p.m., he followed the mail truck into a restricted area intended for employees. Both postal staff and responding police officers asked Jones repeatedly to leave, but he refused, claiming he was an independent journalist engaged in a First Amendment audit.
