Norfolk man sentenced for fraud in Navy Federal Credit Union scam

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Jaquan Hassan Brehon, 26, was sentenced to one and a half years in prison after pleading guilty to fraud charges stemming from a scheme that unfolded at a Norfolk gas station.

The crime, which involved fraudulently obtaining a Navy Federal Credit Union loan, occurred on Nov. 17, 2023, at a gas station on Newtown Road in Norfolk.

Brehon opened a loan of $6,000 on the victim’s cellphone without their permission, convincing the victim to return $5,000 under the guise of mistakenly sending too much money. The fraud took place after Brehon and an associate approached the victim at the gas station, where he claimed to need help buying gas.

While using the victim’s phone, Brehon applied for the loan, which was approved and funded without the victim’s knowledge. He initially claimed to have sent the victim $60, then deceived the victim into believing he had sent $6,000.

After the victim was alerted to the fraud by a family member, he confronted Brehon and his associate, who subsequently fled the scene in a vehicle, leaving behind an unsuccessful attempt to withdraw an additional $1,000 in cash…
