Winter weather prompts postponement of local events

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Several locally planned events are being postponed as winter weather threatens the region this weekend.

Virginia Beach

The Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore announced it is rescheduling its upcoming mobile food distribution event at the Virginia Beach Convention Center due to the forecast. The distribution event has been moved to Feb. 11 to ensure the safety of volunteers and those seeking assistance.

In addition, the Southeastern Guns and Knives Show, scheduled to take place this weekend at the Virginia Beach Convention Center, is also being postponed. Organizers say the show will now be held on Feb. 7 and Feb. 8. Attendees who have already purchased tickets online will be able to use them for the new dates.

While Winter Wildlife Festival activities are set to begin this weekend, Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation said due to unforeseen circumstances, its special guest speaker and keynote speaker events have been postponed.

Natalia Rojas, the special guest speaker scheduled for Friday, will now speak from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20. Joan Strassmann, the festival’s keynote speaker who was scheduled for Sunday, will now speak from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21.

The city’s Parks & Recreation Department said it was aware and is monitoring the forecasted weather conditions “and are prepared to make updates as needed. Currently, there have been no changes to the festival kickoff or weekend trips due to weather.”

Hampton

Hampton University is canceling all Founders Day 2026 activities scheduled for the weekend of January 23–25, 2026. There’s an announcement on the university’s website that states, “The safety of our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and guests remains our highest priority.”…
