Currituck Board approves SUP for Food Lion and shopping center in Corolla

Following a quasi-judicial hearing at their Jan. 20 meeting, the Currituck County Commissioners unanimously approved a special use permit (SUP) for a shopping center that includes a Food Lion just north of the Pine Island Fire Station.

Board Chair Paul O’Neal, citing a “personal and business relationship with one of the applicants,” recused himself from voting on the measure. The SUP applicant is Commercial Properties Inc. of Raleigh, and during the hearing, the applicant’s attorney Bill Brumsey called four witnesses who were approved as experts by the Board.

The project area consists of just over 10 acres, with a proposed floor area of nearly 59,000 square feet. The proposal also calls for 290 parking spaces. Brumsey put a timeline for completion of the project at the end of 2026 into the beginning of 2027…
