City of Portsmouth holds media conference on recent violence and safety strategies

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — The City of Portsmouth conducted a media conference Monday following a fatal shooting on Towne Point Road, which killed a man and injured a five-month-old infant.

City leadership and public safety officials addressed recent violence and strategies being implemented to enhance safety across the community.

The conference was held at Portsmouth City Hall, located at 801 Crawford Street (6th Floor), at 11:30 a.m.

In addition to the Jan. 24 shooting on Towne Point Road, Portsmouth Police have responded to three other serious violent incidents since Jan. 5.

“Our hearts are with all the families who lost a loved one and with the child who was injured in this senseless act of violence,” Mayor Glover said in response to the Towne Point Road shooting. “Gun violence impacts not just the individuals involved, but our entire community. We are taking these incidents seriously and are committed to working with law enforcement and community partners to keep Portsmouth safe.”…
