Bill to protect women from unwanted hysterectomies moves through General Assembly, could help Perwaiz victims

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A bill aimed at better protecting women from unwanted medical surgeries is making its way through the General Assembly.

This comes as a $6 billion lawsuit against the Chesapeake Regional Healthcare system moves through the court process as it relates to former Chesapeake OBGYN Javaid Perwaiz.

A Caroline County woman told 10 On Your Side that the bill, SB 708 has been in the works long before she heard about the victims of Javaid Perwaiz, but she says hearing their stories have shown her that there’s a need for this change.
