HAMPTON, Va. — Dr. Claude Louis knows that healing is as much about spirit as it is about science. A doctor with Riverside Medical Group in Hampton, Louis’s heart is often 1,400 miles south, in his home of Qui-Croit, Haiti.
Having come to the United States on Temporary Protected Status (TPS) following the devastating 2010 earthquake, Louis lives in a state of precarious relief. On Monday, a federal judge blocked the termination of TPS for about 350,000 Haitian migrants living and working in the United States. TPS was set to expire Tuesday, February 3.
“I am happy that the judge has overturned the decision for now,” he said, his voice tempered by the realism of a man used to aftershocks. He knows an appeal is coming…
